What Playgroups are, what we provide

Our Vietnamese supported playgroups, funded by the Department of Social Services and other funding bodies are a free bilingual program for families across Victoria with children from birth to age five. The program is designed to strengthen family relationships and to organise activities for children to learn and develop through play in a physically safe and emotionally secure environment.

All of our playgroups implement an evidence-based approach called Abecedarian. This approach is underpinned by the importance of enriching and enhancing parenting skills to support child learning and development before children start school.

A qualified facilitator leads these fun sessions where parents develop their skills and confidence to support their child’s wellbeing and development. In 2016, the Australian Vietnamese Women's Association was announced to be the Playgroup Agency of the Year by Playgroup Victoria.

Why the program is important

Attending playgroup can help your child(ren) learn about the world, develop social skills and make new friends. It also provides an opportunity for mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers to exchange parenting ideas and experiences. Parents also find out about local services and support networks in the community.

Reading and speaking skills in both English and Vietnamese are fostered through participation in singing, dancing, storytimes, playing games, cultural events celebration and other structured activities in a playgroup setting
