ARE YOU VIETNAMESE OR OF VIETNAMESE BACKGROUND?
In partnership with the Australian Vietnamese Women's Association, The United Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Victoria, Indochinese Elderly Refugee Association and the Footscray Asian Business Association, you are invited to participate in the following survey about people of Vietnamese background living in Australia. The survey is about the ways in which connections with Vietnam are maintained by Vietnamese people who have settled in Australia, the children of Vietnamese people and those who have a close connection with Vietnam. It should take from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on how much you want to say.

International Women Day Writing Competition 2011 Report
In August, last year, we started advertising for a worldwide writing competition on the twin theme; ”The Trung sisters and Women of the 21st Century” . Contributions can be in either English or Vietnamese and can be in any literary format: poem, play, essay or research paper. The first deadline was in December, then, on request, it was extended to January. There would be a 1st prize of $5,000, a 2nd prize $3,000, a 3rd prize $1,000 and up to 10 consolation prizes of $200 each.
We received 51 contributions altogether: 47 in Vietnamese and 4 in English. 29 contributors were women and 18 were men. Not surprisingly, the highest number of contributors come from Australia: a total of 17 from various states. The next highest numbers come from Vietnam with 11, then Canada 7, USA 3, West Germany 1 and Holland 1.
Outstanding International Women Day Centenary Celebrations
On March 4th, 2011, the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day in a big event at Fitzroy Town Hall. The event combined the history of Western women’s struggle for equality since the 19th century with the celebration of the heroic achievements of the Trung Queen in Vietnam in 1st century AD. Seventy students from several secondary schools joined over 200 adults in exploring in concurrent discussion groups, the leadership skills and personal qualities relevant to today’s women, also the need to reconcile Eastern and Western values and attitudes and to support the identity and aspirations of young people . The forum highlighted the awareness of the importance of positive contributions to the community, courage and compassion, initiative and self confidence to achieve success. In particular, an appreciation of the Vietnamese cultural heritage and tradition is crucial to maintaining the links between Australian Vietnamese youths, the elders & forebears. There were traditional dances and songs and a lively ao dai (Vietnamese tunic) competition for mother and young child(ren) teams.
Kỷ Niệm 100 Năm Ngày Quốc Tế Phụ Nữ - Vinh Danh Hai Bà Trưng
Vào ngày Thứ Sáu 4 Tháng 3 Năm 2011, Hội Phụ Nữ Việt Úc đã cử hành trọng thể Lễ “Kỷ Niệm 100 Năm Ngày Quốc Tế Phụ Nữ - Vinh Danh Hai Bà Trưng” tại hội trường chính của Fitzroy Town Hall từ 10 giờ sáng đến 2 giờ 30 chiều. Ngay từ 9 giờ sáng nhiều hội viên, nhân viên và thiện nguyện viên đã có mặt để sửa soạn cho buổi lễ.
Lễ Kỷ Niệm khởi sự lúc 10 giờ 30 sáng với người giới thiệu chương trình là chị Lý Bảo Hiệp – nhân viên HPNVU. Tổng số quan khách cùng các tham dự viên khá đông đảo khoảng hơn 250 người đầy kín hội trường. Đầu tiên, bà Nguyễn Thị Vinh – Hội trưởng, ngỏ lời chào mừng đến tất cả mọi người và các quan khách hiện diện, đặc biệt là bà Alison Clarke - Thị trưởng thành phố Yarra, một số các giáo chức và các em học sinh.
