Vietnamese Prisoner Support Services

 The program has three components: 

1. Support for Vietnamese prisoners and their families - regular prison visits to:

  • Melbourne Assessment Prison (Monday and Thursday)
  • Metropolitan Remand Centre (Bi-weekly, on Wednesday)
  • Port Phillip Prison (Monthly, on the second Friday of the month)
  • Barwon and Marngoneet (Monthly, on the third Friday of the month)

to offer support services (general counselling, information provision, referrals, organising family visits, help contacting family members worldwide, etc.);

2. Cultural events: Vietnamese/Chinese New Year Celebration, Full Moon Festival

3. Mentoring Program to those who are on parole or Community Corrections Orders.

This could be via mentoring sessions (up to six) or supervising them doing community work. Places are limited. Priority would be given to female offenders and or those can commit to a drug-free lifestyle while carrying out their sentence.

Support for Vietnamese prisoners and their families in the following areas:

  • Information and referral to a wide range of legal, health, training, employment and community services
  • Providing face-to-face, general counselling and support services to prisoners and their relatives
  • Providing outreach services to relatives of prisoners if necessary
  • Providing culturally appropriate transitional support services including needs assessment, practical assistance, counselling, family liaison & re-unification, personal & emotional support, information provision, referral to services/programs & representation;

Cultural events:

Help organise Vietnamese/Chinese New Year Celebration and Full Moon Festival in:

  • The five male centres as mentioned above (Barwon, Marngoneet, Melbourne Assessment Prison, Metropolitan Remand Centre, Port Phillip Prison) and the two female centres:
  • Dame Phyllis Frost Centre
  • Tarrengower
