Lunar New Year 2021 - Message From The Prime Minister

As the celebrations for this Lunar New Year begin, my thoughts are filled with gratitude and pride. I have never felt more proud of Australians, or thankful for who we are as a people.

Australia is the most successful multicultural nation on Earth. We celebrate Lunar New Year with joy – knowing it is a reflection of the free, open and inclusive people that we have become. As our National Anthem declares “we are one and free”.

2020 was a difficult year for all of us. In turning from 2020, we lift our heads and look forward – to a better year.

It’s fitting that, in this Year of the Ox, we champion the qualities of strength and courage that brought us through 2020.

The Ox works as part of a team. It is calm, conscientious and hard-working. Qualities needed in any time but particularly in ours.

These qualities will be the mainstay of our endurance in 2021.

I know, for many, the celebration of this Lunar New Year will be different. Cherished family reunions, or the festivals of dragons and lanterns, will not be like they have been in past times.

Though our traditions and celebrations will be different this year, we all carry within us an optimism and hope for better times.

With a safe and effective vaccine almost at hand, I have confidence that our full-hearted celebrations will return when we prevail over this great challenge. With a safe and effective vaccine almost at hand, I have confidence that our full-hearted celebrations will return when we prevail over this great challenge.

I send my warm greetings and wishes for a better 2021. Happy Lunar New Year.
